Happy New Year!

From the staff of Monroe County Sports Commission, welcome to 2010! Here is a recap of December 2009. The Monroe County Sports Commission hosted a Holiday Reception to thank and acknowledge those special individuals within our community that have truly made a difference to Youth Sports in Rochester. New this year, the staff and board of directors thought it was time to introduce a series of awards that will be given year after year for specific categories. Here are the results:

The 2009 Most Valuable Organization was presented to:
The Rochester Edge, for their outstanding performance in hosting the NEW Nike Bauer International Invite (formerly Fire on Ice) prestigious girl’s hockey tournament.

The 2009 Rookie Event of the Year Award was presented to:
The Eastern Zone Short Course Championship hosted by Fairport Area Swim Team. This award is specifically given to a new “Rookie” event that had high attendance.

The 2009 Comeback event of the Year Award was presented to:
The Head of the Genesee hosted by Rochester Community Rowing.

With 2009 behind us, we are running full speed ahead, securing, selling and marketing events. Starting in January we have thousands of youth hockey participants traveling into Rochester for the Rochester 2000 and 2001 Alliance Hockey Tournaments and Empire State Cup Tournament and thousands of volleyball players traveling for the Rochester Can Am and Hocus Pocus Tournaments.

Some other major 2010 events include the Atlantic Hockey Championships in March, The Upstate New York Bowling Tournament starting in April, The AJGA Tour in May, The Tour de New York in August, the National Senior Games Championships and Euflexxa Hockey Classics in September and two weekends of the Turkey Shoot Lacrosse tournaments in November.
